Perhaps the biggest story of the week in professional wrestling has been the news that Dean Ambrose has notified WWE that he will not be renewing his contract when it expires after WrestleMania.
With the news that Chris Jericho has signed with the new AEW promotion, WWE has begun to make their moves so that other talent will not follow the same path as The Lunatic Fringe.
According to a report from PWInsider, officials were meeting with Smackdown Live talents whose deals are set to expire in the next year or two, backstage at the most recent taping. The goal is to lock them in to new deals as soon as possible.
I can certainly imagine that you wouldn’t want to lose this plethora of talent:
WWE has been trying to lock talents in to new five-year deals for quite some time, dating back to new deals for The Miz and Kevin Owens last year.
Editor’s Opinion:
This is an interesting development. and I certainly understand WWE’s desire to try to keep their top talent from pursuing other opportunities. This also tells me that AEW is going to be a bigger threat than a lot of people think.
