WWE has officially announced that United States champion Kalisto will be defending his title at the “Extreme Rules” pay-per-view against Rusev. Last week on “Monday Night Raw,” Rusev was the winner of a Battle Royal to determine the no. 1 contender for the title.
Kalisto has been the United States champion since the 2016 “Royal Rumble” pay-per-view. He defeated Alberto Del Rio at the event, beginning his second reign as champion. His last title defense was a successful one, as he defeated Ryback at the recent “Payback” pay-per-view.
Rusev’s last reign as United States champion began on November 3, 2014, when he defeated then champion Sheamus, in a special match that followed “Raw” on the WWE Network. He would hold the title up until WrestleMania 31, when he lost his first match in the company to John Cena.
In a recent interview on WWE.com, both Rusev and Lana talked about how “The Bulgarian Brute” will devour Kalisto in their match.
Editor’s Note:
The more that I think about this, the more that this match makes sense. If WWE wants to keep the United States championship on Kalisto, they can have him overcome the odds again, by defeating a larger opponent, like Rusev. However, Rusev has the potential to be a monster heel, and winning the title would be a great way to once again begin that trend.
