However, even though Dillinger lost the match, he was definitely a winner in another regard; his reaction from the crowd was nothing less than magical. Not only could you hear the crowd chanting ’10’ throughout the entire contest, but they would also chant this every time that the referee would begin a count throughout the entire night.
At one point, the crowd event booed during Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Samoa Joe when they both got up after a 5-count, because they couldn’t chant ’10’ anymore.
The reaction that Dillinger received was electric, authentic and organic. He was a part of every match on the remainder of the card, despite performing first in the night. And this leads me to one simple conclusion.
In my opinion, Tye Dillinger’s ’10’ gimmick is, and please excuse the pun, “perfect” for the main roster.
Some of the greatest superstars of all time have gimmicks that have transcended the wrestling ring. Ric Flair, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, and Daniel Bryan all have chants that continue to live on, even though their in-ring careers have come to an end.
If done correctly, the same could be true for Dillinger. Once he is brought up to the main roster, if booked correctly, I could see the crowd chanting ’10’ every time that the referee does a count during any match, or when a superstar uses multiple punches to someone on the turnbuckle. And that would be proof that the guy is over.
Now, this may not be what WWE wants, which would be unfortunate, because I think Dillinger is a hell of a performer. Great in the ring, charismatic, and has an unique connection with the fans that comes along only every once in a while.
I hope that WWE gives him a chance on the main roster, and books him correctly, so that they can take advantage of this “perfect” opportunity to create another memorable chant for the members of the WWE Universe.
