Kevin Owens is still the WWE Universal champion. He held onto the title at Roadblock: End of the Line by scoring a win over Roman Reigns via disqualification. Owens’ good friend Chris Jericho showed up to hit Owens with a Codebreaker, giving Owens the win via disqualification. This seems, on the surface, like an odd way for a champion to retain the title, but it’s unfortunately par for the course for Owens since he’s won the title.
Owens is being handled in a somewhat strange way as champion. The overall storyline seems be that Owens only has the title because of outside help. He wins matches with the help of Jericho, and in fact he only won the title in the first place because of interference from Triple H. Owens is champ, but he hasn’t won a notable match clean yet. Sure, he’s a heel champion, and heels often win in nefarious ways, but Owens has to be the most ineffectual champion in recent memory. This is a shame, because Owens is a really talented wrestler who’s great on the mic, but he’s being essentially undermined every step of the way.

Granted, Owens is probably only champ because Finn Balor got injured in the match where he won the title. This was probably not in the cards. Additionally, the WWE was never going to have Reigns lose clean, because the WWE loves Reigns, regardless of how fans feel. That being said, if the WWE is going to keep handling Owens’ title reign in this fashion, it is going to be hard for fans to really care about Owens as champ. Of course, if WWE doesn’t seem to really care about Owens as champ, who can blame them?
