WWE’s RAW branded pay-per-view Roadblock is coming up Sunday, but you can be forgiven for looking a little beyond that event. That’s because at the end of January Royal Rumble is happening. Now there’s something worth getting excited about, because the Royal Rumble is the best event in pro wrestling.

That’s not to say that Royal Rumble, the pay-per-view, is the best pay-per-view, although that’s an argument that can be made as well. No, what we’re saying is that the Royal Rumble itself, the match, is the best thing in wrestling. Battle royals are usually good in their own right. You get a bunch of guys in a ring and chaos ensues. However, the Royal Rumble takes things to a whole different level, in terms of storytelling and staging. Battle royals can get too convoluted, especially early. A few guys are destined to go out early to clear the ring. You don’t get that in a Royal Rumble.

No, instead you get wrestlers coming out one at a time at regular intervals. That adds a completely different flavor to the event. You’re always wondering whose music is going to hit, hoping for a surprise. Usually, you get one or two of those surprises. Sure, occasionally it’s somebody like Drew Carey, but what’re you gonna do? There’s always one guy who is in the ring for an extremely long time, which is interesting whether or not they win. Plus, eventually, only two people are left, and we know the winner is going to get a title shot. The stakes are super high, and it’s always a momentous event, probably the most significant outside of Wrestlemania. (That’s not to say the storytelling is always perfect. See: Vince McMahon, Royal Rumble winner)

The ramp up to the 2017 Royal Rumble has already begun, because both Goldberg and Brock Lesnar have been announced as participants. The intrigue will only build, and the payoff should be immense. It’ll be hard for WWE to screw it up. That’s the power of the Royal Rumble match, the best thing WWE has to offer.
