When asked if he’d be facing AJ Styles in Royal Rumble 2017, Shawn Michaels cited the closure of retirement as the reason why such a match wouldn’t pan out. However, part of his statement to 105.3 THE FAN left room for doubt. “I don’t know if anyone cares that I’m from there,” he told them. “I think the WWE has happily moved on from me.”

This isn’t entirely true, though. Earlier this year it was reported that Michaels landed a job at the WWE Performance Center. Initially it was thought that he’d be the head trainer, but that wasn’t quite the case. Rather, Michaels was asked to work with a handful of new talent to get those select performers ready for the main roster, while Matt Bloom retains his role as head trainer.

Even still, that means Michaels is actively working for the company and not forgotten by the WWE as he claimed.

There’s also the matter of the timing and location for next year’s Royal Rumble. It’s set to take place at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The only other time a Royal Rumble has taken place in that particular venue was in 1997.

And what happened during that Royal Rumble? Shawn Michaels was in the main event, wrestling against Sycho Sid for the World Heavyweight Championship title, which Michaels ended up winning.

Do you really think the WWE would want to pass up the opportunity to have The Heartbreak Kid make a 20th anniversary appearance at the event? He wouldn’t even have to wrestle; he could just show up and be recognized for his accomplishments.

Not to mention, San Antonio is Michaels’ hometown. They’d be foolish to let this perfect chance to showcase one of their greatest wrestlers slip past.

What’s your take? Should Michaels have a match at Royal Rumble 2017 to commemorate his victory twenty years ago, or at least be a part of the event in some fashion? Let us know in the comments below or on our Facebook page.
