After Tuesday night’s Smackdown, the dust has settled on Superstar Swap. The moves made to bring superstars to RAW were interesting, but didn’t maybe feel as impactful as the WWE would have wanted. However, the men moving to Smackdown feel even more lackluster.
Moving Sin Cara over to Smackdown feels pointless, but he’ll likely never actually pop up on screen. It’s also hard to get excited about the Shining Stars, especially when they make their first appearance weirdly wearing jeans and no shirts. People don’t care about Jinder Mahal. Before the swap, I had argued they should use this opportunity to break up the New Day. Instead, all three of them are on their way to Smackdown. Sure, that means they have some new people to feud with, but their schtick remains somewhat stale. The move will help, but the New Day aren’t going to regain their prior level as long as they are together. Honestly, the only move that really seems likely to help is Rusev’s. Rusev was floundering on RAW, but he’s still a talented performer, and he could easily get back in the US title picture.
However, it’s the two biggest names, or at least male names, that made the move that speak to the issue with Superstar Swap. Nobody should be surprised to see Kevin Owens on Smackdown after Dean Ambrose showed up on RAW. That’s fine. Owens is great, and he’ll be great wherever he goes. Then, it turns out they also brought Sami Zayn over to the blue brand. Owens and Zayn? That’s just more of the same, just on a different night. It shows that the Superstar Swap didn’t really shake things up as much as we may have hoped. The two shows don’t really feel all that different. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it makes you wonder if this was anything more than a gimmick to get people to watch this week.
