In the long term, or at least the medium term, the WWE is promoting the upcoming Royal Rumble pay-per-view. With the Royal Rumble in San Antonio, Michaels’ hometown, it’s only fitting to trot out the Heartbreak Kid to help keep people excited in the lead up to one of the biggest pay-per-views of the year. Perhaps this is also why the WWE has put a classic Michaels match from a past Royal Rumble on YouTube.

The match in question took place in 2005, when Edge took on Michaels to kick off the event. The match wasn’t for a title or anything, later that evening JBL and Triple H would hold onto their respective titles, but nevertheless this match featured two future WWE Hall of Famers duking it out. Then The Undertaker beat Heidenreich in a casket match, because 2005 was a weird time.

Earlier this year, right before Survivor Series, Edge was brought back to help promote that pay-per-view. Now it’s Michaels’ turn. Before these two were legends trotted out to give people a reason to watch WWE, though, they were two highly successful wrestlers who knew how to put on a fine match.
