Now that it’s January, many wrestling fans are in a Royal Rumble mood. This year’s Royal Rumble is already looking pretty interesting, and there will be a lot of speculation about who will win the actual Royal Rumble match until the first two competitors get in the ring to start the proceedings. In order to help you stay amped for the Royal Rumble while you wait for this year’s to happen, here’s a bit of Royal Rumble history, going way back to the beginning.

The first Royal Rumble match happened back in 1988, when it was only a 20 person event. It was a new idea, and nobody knew it would eventually become one of the biggest events in wrestling. The winner of the first Royal Rumble match? A little guy by the name of “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan. You probably think of him as the guy with the American flag and the two-by-four who just yells “Hooooo!” a bunch, but back in the day he was highly thought of enough to win the inaugural Royal Rumble. It was a crowning moment in the career of a WWE Hall of Famer. Now, the question becomes who will be joining Duggan as a Royal Rumble winner this year?”
