Kenny Omega is one of the most successful stars on the indie wrestling circuit. He has a match for his IWGP Heavyweight Championship against Kazuchika Okada at the Tokyo Dome on January 4. Omega has seen a lot of his fellow indie stars sign with the WWE during the course of 2016. Guys like AJ Styles, Karl Anderson, and Luke Gallows, all former Bullet Club members, are now on the WWE roster. Omega, for his part, seems to have mixed feelings on this.
In an interview with Uproxx, Omega said:
“It seems as though we’re headed towards a monopoly, if I were to speak honestly. WWE is hiring people just to hire them. That’s fine, and I’m happy for whoever’s happy to collect a paycheck from them. A lot of my good friends are now receiving work and receiving money. But sadly, a lot of those people are signing with WWE just to ride the pine. You can’t put all these guys on TV. On one end, you have these mom-and-pop indy superstars getting TV time, and people all around the world are able to see the art of what they do. And in a lot of cases, they’re enjoying it, which is fantastic. I’m really happy about that.”

You can understand where Omega is coming from. While some guys like AJ Styles have shot up the card, a lot of former indie stars are lower down the pecking order, and some are even in NXT. Even Gallows and Anderson, a very successful tag team overseas, are basically treading water on RAW right now. In the end, it’s all a business, and people have different feelings about how the business works.
