After being away for nearly three months, former fifteen time WWE World Heavyweight Champion John Cena is scheduled to make his return to SmackDown next Tuesday night.
There’s already a ton of speculation regarding Cena’s return — will he challenge for AJ Styles’ WWE title? Will he go after the Intercontinental Championship for the first time in his career? We’ll have to wait and see. But, one thing is clear, which is that WWE’s biggest star is ready to finally step back into the squared circle.
Cena has been pushing his return to the blue brand on a daily basis via his Twitter page, as he’s been counting down the days until he finally returns to the ring.

During his time away, Cena has been involved in various movie and television projects, and he even hosted Saturday Night Live. But, from now until WrestleMania, he’ll be a regular character on WWE television.
Cena wrestled less than 60 matches in 2016, which is, by far, the fewest amount of matches that he’s ever wrestled in a calendar year. Will he wrestle more than that in 2017? That remains to be seen, but WWE isn’t expecting him to be around all that much.

As of right now, Cena is listed as one of the favorites to win the 2017 Royal Rumble match, along with Chris Jericho and Finn Balor, who may or may not make his return at the event. If Cena does win the annual 30-man match, he’ll have won the match three times, which will tie Stone Cold Steve Austin for the most Rumble wins in history.
According to Forbes, WWE could be building towards John Cena vs. The Undertaker at WrestleMania 33. Furthermore, it could be a career vs. title match, where if Undertaker loses, he’ll be forced to retire.

Cena’s return on next week’s SmackDown will probably just be to announce that he’ll be entering the Royal Rumble match. But, who knows? Maybe WWE will actually do something significant with him on his first night back. You shouldn’t expect them to though, because their year-end shows are typically throw-away shows, because they know that most of their regular audience won’t be watching because of the holiday season.
