A guy like John Cena is able to write his own ticket with WWE. He can take time off to film a movie, do Saturday Night Live, and then decide he wants to come back and bask in the glory. Apparently, that’s not a model WWE wants to repeat — at least according to Ryback.
On episode 17 of the Conversations With the Big Guy podcast, Ryback said he learned this valuable piece of information from Triple H while negotiating his first contract. This part of the conversation begins around the 50:30 mark.
“Hunter told me directly. . .’We never want another marquee name here in the WWE,'” Ryback said. “[Hunter said]’We’re never going to have another John Cena.’ And if you look, that’s why they book guys the way they book them. They don’t want guys to have too much power anymore. . .They like to control it.”
Ryback said without having that total control over talent, there’s a possibility that a wrestler could “catch fire,” garnering the mainstream success and attention that empowers them to leverage their personality against the organization.
In other recent Ryback news, he blamed the failure of The Nexus on John Cena.
What do you think about Ryback’s comments? Do you believe him? Do you think WWE is too controlling? Or are they doing what they need to do from a business standpoint? Share your thoughts in the comment section below, and keep the conversation going on our Wrestling Rumors Facebook page.
