Last weekend, Sting led the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2016 into wrestling immortality. It was a great night of stories and history, but it will go down in history as the night that The Icon called it a career.
At the end of his speech, Sting officially announced his retirement. It’s very unfortunate that his moment was taken from him by the dirtsheets, but that’s the business of pro wrestling.
Shortly before Wrestlemania 32 began, Sting spoke with Jonathan Coachman on ESPN to discuss his career, his retirement, the injury that ended his career, and Wrestlemania.
You can watch the full interview right here. Below are some of the highlights:
Was it a difficult decision to retire now?
“It was a difficult moment for me, because you have the crowd chanting ‘One more match’ and I wanted that one more match. It is time, for several different reasons, but it was hard to do after 30 years”
What happened at Night of Champions last year?
“At Night of Champions against Seth Rollins, there was like a whiplash that happened twice in the match. The first one was shock and numbness down the fingers, and I’ve had that before, but this was pretty severe. The second time it happened I lost control of my legs. Long story short, I have spinal cervical stenosis in two areas of my neck”
