There was something special about Rob Van Dam. He was a pioneer and is considered by many to be the face of the original ECW promotion. That gave him a unique fanbase in this industry, which translated into an excellent WWE career.

RVD was a great Intercontinental Champion and a top face for WWE throughout the 2000’s, but he never truly got his due in as a top guy because he got into legal trouble shortly after winning the WWE title in 2006. Today, that would not be as big a deal.

Recently, he did an interview with Sports Illustrated to discuss his wrestling career as well as a possible return to WWE in the future. However, the interesting reveal was the heel turn he almost had, which would have seen him become a “Paul Heyman Guy.”

You can read the full interview right here. Below is what RVD had to say on the topic:

“The office wanted to put me with Paul and turn me heel. But I already have one foot out the door in wrestling, so why change to a heel when I’m on my way out? I’ve been so willing to stay strong and stick to my guns for so long when it comes to my beliefs. I’m a symbol to people for a lot of different things, and changing me to a heel, at the last minute, could change that.”
