in the weeks before AJ Styles debuted in WWE, it was revealed that WWE’s original plans for his debut were to be in the “Royal Rumble” match, but other rumors stated that he’d be debuting on Monday Night Raw the next night. Ultimately, WWE decided not to complicate the situation and just let AJ debut during the Rumble.

Aj Styles debuted as the number 3 entrant, and he went one on one with several WWE superstars, including Roman Reigns and others. He was eliminated from the match by Kevin Owens, but that wasn’t the original plan.

According to Wrestling-Edge.com. WWE’s original booking in the match would have seen Dean Ambrose eliminate him from the match. WWE changed the plans because they were concerned about what kind of reaction Styles would receive from the WWE Universe.

Not only that but WWE wanted to make sure that no will ill came onto Ambrose since they made more changes to the match midway through to let Ambrose be in the final two with Triple H to protect Roman.

The reason Owens got the elimination was to gain some heel heat after losing earlier in the night to Dean Ambrose. Everyone thought it would be easier for Owens than it would be for anyone else.
