When Zack Ryder won the seven-man ladder match at Wrestlemania 32, there was a lot of debate about that decision to have him win the Intercontinental Championship.
WWE’s logic was that Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn didn’t need the IC title to be successful, and it was a great moment for Zack Ryder to realize his dream on the grandest stage of them all.
I don’t think many had an issue with a feel-good moment for Ryder, but the question was how his title reign would be able to last.
Last night on Raw, The Miz challenged Ryder and thanks to interference from his wife and former WWE Divas Champion Maryse, Miz left Dallas with the IC title.
While many people were questioning Ryder as the Intercontinental Champion, just as many are questioning The Miz becoming a five-time IC Champion. However, it’s one of the best decisions WWE has made for The Miz character in a long time.
What WWE did last night is rebuild The Miz character overnight. He’s not the favorite of many, but he’s a very good heel in the midcard, but he hasn’t had much momentum over the last year. He was very good during the Jericho vs. Styles feud by giving wins to both men as they kept the tension between them.
Last night, Ryder was coming out hot off his win at Wrestlemania, but Miz gained a lot of heel momentum by interacting with his father, stealing the IC title, and effectively killing Zack Ryder’s dream. Also, Maryse is back as his valet to add a heater to him. Suddenly, The Miz is a top heel with good momentum and the IC Champion.
I’m not the biggest fan of The Miz either, and I don’t want him to be the IC Champion right now. But, WWE did a great job making him an effective heel, and now we’ve got a great foil to rebuild Zack Ryder as a face.
Do you think it was a good idea for The Miz to win the IC title the night after Wrestlemania?
