Austin Aries is going to do great things in NXT, especially if he makes it to the main roster. There are several intriguing match-ups for him in WWE, and there are a few dream scenarios.
Recently, Aries did an interview with Jim Ross on “The Ross Report” to discuss his transition to NXT, his size limitations, and his in-ring style.
You can listen to the full interview between “The Greatest Man That Ever Lived” and JR right here. Below are some of the highlights:
Who influenced Austin’s in-ring style?
“Well I grew up watching ‘rastlin,” Austin begins, “I started watching wrestling in the early ‘80s and the first stuff that really grabbed me was the Crockett Era. So—not consciously, but—as I’ve kind of looked at my work over the years, I definitely think you’ll see some influences from the Horsemen. Just from growing up watching them. That era—to me—is what I think of when I think of wrestling.”
How has he been able to transcend expectations throughout his career despite his size?
“When I first had the opportunity to get into professional wrestling, I was actually just in such awe that a wrestling ring was in front of me. I broke-in in 2000, and this was kind of before the internet really boomed. And you couldn’t just find a wrestling school because it was still a little bit protected. You had to know somebody that knew somebody. Luckily my best friend was training with Eddie Sharkey in Minneapolis. He kind of called me out of the blue and told me he was doing this, and in disbelief I had to go check it out. I saw this ring and I was just in awe that I had an opportunity to do this.”
“I then found out—in a sort of round-about way—that I wasn’t big enough. And that was the first time that concept kind of hit me. Like, ‘Oh wow—I might not be big enough to get certain opportunities.’ But it didn’t really deter me. I never wrestled like a small guy, I think I always resisted that in some ways.”
