It’s not that Asuka vs. Mickie James isn’t something to get legitimately excited about for NXT Takeover: Toronto, but it highlights exactly what’s wrong with the NXT Women’s Division right now.
First and foremost, it was a very welcome and genuine surprise to see Mickie James return to WWE programming. The match will be great, and it provides Asuka with a huge challenge. The only problem is it’s a band-aid covering up a much bigger issue.
No offense to anyone in the division, but the depth of NXT’s women has fallen over the past several months dramatically. There is a great deal of potential in the division for the future, but Asuka remains the only big star and the NXT Women’s Champion.
It’s not believable for anyone else on the women’s roster in NXT to defeat her in a match for the title. No one has the momentum to even challenge Asuka’s reign at the moment, especially since she is still undefeated.
This is where Mickie James comes into the game. She’ll give Asuka a great match, a big win, and allow NXT to develop the rest of the roster, so they can figure something out after Toronto.
I don’t have a problem with it, but the NXT Women’s Division needs to be much stronger than it is right now. Asuka can only be on top unchallenged for so long.
How would you fix NXT’s Women’s Division?
