2. Social Media’s Power Over WWE

WWE Reaches a Half a Billion Followers on Social Media

Ultimately, TMZ really didn’t crack anything. Lana and Rusev no doubt went to WWE brass and told them of their engagement, because TMZ only launched the story based on Lana posting the news on social media.

WWE’s constant need to push social media is something that has been working because it gets the fans involved, but it also can lead to situations like this. If something spreads over social media, WWE is kind of in a damned if you do, or don’t scenario. They could ignore the engagement and continue what they’re doing, or they can acknowledge it and give in to the power of social media.

If WWE will bend to social media pressure about Lana and Rusev, then what else have they, or will they bend to in the future. It seems like Twitter, or social media in general can shift WWE storylines at will if they hit the right chord. Whether that’s a good or a bad thing is a matter of debate. But, Lana and Rusev changing the perception of their characters through social media is the perfect example of it’s power over WWE.
