He has the background. There are a lot of other sport whose stars come into wrestling later on. For years the main sport to have athletes jump over to wrestling is football, but mixed martial arts has become a great source for professional wrestlers. Between Ronda Rousey and the revamped Brock Lesnar, WWE understands what kind of talent the UFC can offer. Now they might have a new possible star on their hands.
On Saturday night (or really early Sunday morning), Daniel Cormier was defeated by Stipe Miocic in a Heavyweight Title fight at UFC 252. After the decision loss, Cormier announced his retirement, which had been expected coming into the fight. Cormier is 40 years old and has won both the UFC Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Titles and has a Hall of Fame career in mixed martial arts. Now he might be in for a run in wrestling as well.
On the most recent edition of Sunday Night’s Main Event podcast, Dave Meltzer said that both WWE and FOX are interested in bringing in Cormier to work in WWE in some way. Cormier is a noted WWE fan and has had talks with WWE before. There is no word on when Cormier would debut in WWE or if he is interested in coming into the company now. Cormier also suffered an eye injury during Saturday’s fight and may need additional time to heal.
Cormier has been involved with wrestlers before. Check out what was set up:
Opinion: I’m not sure what to think about this but after the near debacle of Cain Velasquez, WWE might be a little more careful with trying to bring in former UFC stars. However, they might have something better with Cormier, who has shown some great charisma and has done a lot of commentary in the UFC. I could come up with worse ideas, but maybe WWE might want to look internally instead of trying to bring in another fighter.
