So much for that? Back at WrestleMania 36, Drew McIntyre defeated Brock Lesnar in the main event to become the new WWE Champion. He has gone on to hold the title for five months since, during which he has become one of the biggest stars that WWE has to offer. As positive as the reign has been, McIntyre has to lose the title at some point and WWE may be hinting at just that.
McIntyre is currently in the middle of a heck of a feud with Randy orton, who he defeated to retain the title at Summerslam. Orton was not done with McIntyre yet though and went on to Punt him three times in one night. McIntyre responded with a trio of Claymores a few weeks later. Both attacks resulted in someone being taken away in an ambulance, resulting in an ambulance match at Clash Of Champions. This may go badly for McIntyre.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE has been setting up McIntyre to lose his title at Clash Of Champions. This includes Orton losing back to back pay per view matches and the gimmick being designed to set up a fluke finish. At the same time, WWE has been planning Edge vs. Orton for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 37, meaning that Orton would have to win the title at some point.
It was a long road here. Check out how WWE set up this match:
Opinion: I’m not sure what to expect at Clash Of Champions but I really, really hope that McIntyre’s reign isn’t ended for the sake of Edge vs. Orton III. The feud has been fine but I really don’t think it’s interesting enough to take over the top spot at the biggest show of the year. McIntyre has been champion for a good while and should keep it even longer, as he is one of the best things about WWE today. Hopefully they don’t mess with that when McIntyre needs the title a lot more than Edge vs. Orton.
