It had to change sometime. Back in 2014, the wrestling world changed forever with the launch of the WWE Network. The new format made wrestling available to the masses in a way that has never been done before, with fans being able to buy into the WWE video vault for a rather cheap price. Live pay per views were included in the offer and that became one of the biggest draws of the entire thing. That might change in the future though.
One of the biggest questions about the WWE Network was the way the pricing would work. Yes there would be a lot of fans buying the service, but that was going to be a lot of money being lost in the pay per view market. It was a delicate balance between the two sides and while it has worked for a very long time, that balance may be going away by this time next year.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WrestleMania 36 may be the last time that WrestleMania is available as part of the WWE Network for no additional cost. Starting next year, there is a strong chance that the show will be available as a traditional pay per view. This year’s show will be available on the WWE Network, but also on the Fox Sports App and FITE TV. There is no word on when any change would be announced.
That’s a big change. Check out a little of this year’s hype plus what we can expect next year:
Opinion: This is the kind of thing that will work out well in the end for the company but maybe not so well for the wrestling fans. At the end of the day though, we have had six years of WrestleMania included in a huge package with the WWE Network and it is hard to imagine that really working forever. I can understand the idea of having the one pay per view price a year, but WWE might not like the reaction if they ask fans to pay for every pay per view after offering them to fans for so long.
