There’s a reason for that. WWE does not have the best track record when it comes to some of its spur of the moment decisions. Oftentimes it feels like they are just throwing things out there out of nowhere and it can cause some rather tilted heads. One of their bigger questions marks often comes in the area of names changes, which happened again this week. There might be a bit more of a reason for that though.
Earlier this week, news broke that WWE was changing Matt Riddle’s name to just Riddle. This was not exactly the most well received story, as WWE has a history of randomly changing wrestlers’ names, often despite there being very little wrong with it in the first place. That seems to be the case again here, though this time Vince McMahon might have a more concrete reason in mind.
According to Fightful Select, McMahon is behind the name change and was moved to do it after watching Riddle vs. Sheamus on Monday Night Raw. McMahon was rather pleased with the match and now wants to move Riddle into a more serious role, which is why he is changing the name. Riddle has also responded to the situation on Twitter, saying that he prefers the new name as it is his real last name and something he has been called his entire life.
People it’s okay I’ve been called Riddle most my life, I actually prefer it and it’s my real last name ? #bro #stallion #RIDDLE

This got McMahon jazzed up. Check out what got his attention:
Opinion: I mean…I guess? I’m not sure how much more serious the name “Riddle”, which is usually considered something witty or even funny, is than “Matt Riddle”, or why you would want to change what had caused Riddle to be on WWE’s radar in the first place, but that’s where we are. That being said, it almost has to be better than having him lose to Sheamus on TV, so maybe this can help. I’m not convinced that it will, but maybe it does.
