They have a unique perspective. Wrestlers do not think like fans, and that is what makes their opinions rather interesting in a different way. As much wrestling as a fan can see, it isn’t the same as having been in the ring and being trained to think like a wrestler. At the same time, most wrestlers are big fans as well, giving them an even more interesting way of looking at things. That was on display Tuesday.
WWE Backstage is an interesting kind of wrestling show as it is built around experts talking about the comings and goings in WWE. Each week features an expert panel discussing what is going on in wrestling at the moment, but that is kind of difficult to do in the last few weeks. Since there is so little wrestling to watch these days, it’s time to open the vault, which the show did on Tuesday.
The WWE on FOX YouTube account has released this week’s edition of Backstage in full. The episode features WWE Hall of Famers Mark Henry and Booker T., along with Renee Young, watching the Rock vs. Steve Austin from WrestleMania 19 in 2003. They watch the entire match in real time, offering a wrestler’s perspective on the psychology and history between the two. After the match, the Rock offers his own thoughts on what the match meant to him.
It’s like director’s commentary. Check out the match, plus the commentary, in full (the match begins at 23:53):
Opinion: This is the kind of thing I love to see as you can watch the match all you want as a fan, but there are things that we are just never going to understand without being a wrestler. That makes for some fascinating points of view and people like Booker T. and Henry have been on some big stages in their careers before. I could go for a lot more of these as they have something different here.
