There is your main event. We are just under two weeks away from WrestleMania Backlash and that means that we are going to need to really hammer home the card on the way there. Only a handful of matches have been announced so far and that leaves quite a few things that still need to be done. As of this Friday night, one of the most important matches has been covered.
This week on SmackDown, Cesaro became the new #1 contender to Roman Reigns for the Universal Title, with the title match coming at WrestleMania Backlash on May 16. Cesaro defeated Seth Rollins to earn the title match, with the stipulation being added by Teddy Long before the match. Cesaro pinned Rollins after a Neutralizer, followed by interference from the Usos.
The title match will be Cesaro’s first ever singles match for a World Title in WWE. Both Cesaro and Daniel Bryan had been lobbying for Cesaro to receive the title shot in the previous weeks. This included Bryan threatening to have Cesaro attack Jey Uso if Reigns was unwilling to grant the title shot. Reigns and Cesaro have faced each other in two singles matches in WWE, with Reigns winning both times.
It was a heck of a match. Check out how it went down and Cesaro’s thoughts after the show:
Opinion: This is the kind of match that you probably knew was coming a few weeks ago but that is not the worst thing in the world. Above all else, Cesaro is fired up now and it could make for a heck of a showdown. The return of Jimmy Uso could be quite a wildcard in the whole thing, though it is hard to fathom the idea that Reigns is going to be losing the title, despite a well set up match.
What do you expect from the match? How have you liked the setup? Let us know in the comments below.
