That hasn’t gone well. The rise of AEW has changed the way the wrestling world works as WWE is no longer the only big game in the industry. That is the kind of shakeup that some fans have been asking for since WCW went out of business and now they have what they wanted. Things might have gotten all the more intense this week though, as the AEW boss had something to say that didn’t go so well.

This Tuesday, AEW Dynamite and WWE NXT went head to head, with NXT’s audience and ratings coming out ahead. NXT featured appearances by John Cena and the Undertaker among others. Following the show, AEW President Tony Khan sent out a tweet, saying that for the first time ever, Undertaker and Cena appeared on a show that drew less than one million viewers. Khan credited this to Dynamite airing opposite the show. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, sources in WWE have referred to this as a “declaration of war”.
This week, 2 active decades-long ratings streaks from 2 great legends were ended
With all due respect, until this week's head-to-head AEW on TBS vs WWE on USA, neither John Cena nor Undertaker had ever been on a WWE show with under 1 million total viewers + under 400k in the demo— Tony Khan (@TonyKhan) October 12, 2023
It was a busy night. Check out the cameos, plus some of Dynamite:
Opinion: I’m not sure if I see any upside to Khan’s comments, as while NXT didn’t break a million viewers, it still drew higher numbers than Dynamite. At the end o the day, Dynamite did well enough, but it might be better to not throw stones at WWE, who has shown that they can bring in bigger stars at any given moment and do so well. AEW needs to focus on itself more than attacking WWE, as that’s a different world entirely.
