There are a lot of stories to tell from WWE. The last few years have seen a new era in mainstream stories being told about wrestlers. Between the HBO documentary on Andre the Giant, Dark Side of the Ring and the ESPN 30 For 30 documentary on Ric Flair, there have been a lot of different looks at wrestlers that we haven’t gotten before. We might be getting some more now, albeit from a different perspective.
One of the best aspects of wrestling are how many people there are throughout the business. With so many wrestlers out there, you can never run out of people to talk about. You really could do all kinds of documentaries and histories about them and that is the kind of thing that we have seen a lot more of as of late. WWE is getting in on the game sooner rather than later.
WWE.com has announced a partnership with A&E to produce five documentaries on wrestling personalities over the next two years. The names included are Randy Savage, Roddy Piper, Booker T., Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin, with the first three films airing in 2020 and the latter two airing in 2021. There are no specific dates announced and no word on whether these could lead to more in the future. A&E has aired documentaries on wrestlers in the past, including Hulk Hogan and Mick Foley.
There are some big names here. Check out some of what you’ll see this year:
Opinion: I’m not sure what to expect out of these things as WWE is going to keep their filter on the, but having A&E involved could make them a little more interesting. I don’t think they’re going to be anything close to Dark Side of the Ring or the Flair documentary, but it is always cool to see wrestling getting some more mainstream attention. Wrestlers are some of the most entertaining people in the world and they deserve the spotlight.
