Change subject to change too? Wrestling is a unique sport as it is designed to make you believe a big lie. It’s true that these people are all incredible athletes and have some aspects of their real personalities involved in their on-screen characters, but at the end of the day, the whole thing is put together in advance. That means when you hear something that is supposed to feel real, it is easier to believe. That wasn’t the case this week though in a surprise twist.
Johnny Gargano has held the NXT North American Title since December 6 and has spent a good chunk of his reign dealing with Kushida. The two have yet to have a title match, or even a singles match for that matter. That tradition seemed to be continuing after their title match at Takeover: Vengeance Day was canceled due to an arm injury to Gargano. Kushida would face Gargano’s The Way teammate Austin Theory on this week’s NXT, but then the twist continued.
This week on NXT, Gargano attacked Kushida, revealing that the arm injury was a swerve and the title match was still on. Gargano interfered in Kushida’s match with Theory and attacked him, though Dexter Lumis prevented Gargano from causing more serious damage to Kushida’s arm. This keeps the Takeover: Vengeance Day card at five matches, as was previously scheduled.
This got a little surprising. Check out how the match went down:
Opinion: I’m a little surprised by the swerve and that’s a nice feeling to have. At the same time though, it’s a bit odd to cancel a match and then reveal that it is still on later in the same day. That’s not the worst thing in the world though and I’m glad the match is going to be taking place. They have set it up over the last few weeks and now we are going to get to see it paid off. Well done on the swerve if nothing else.
