You had to know this was coming. Last year, the wrestling television landscape changed drastically with both NXT and AEW Dynamite moving to prime time on Wednesday nights. This set off the Wednesday Night Wars, which have been more skirmishes than anything else. Dynamite has gotten the better of the numbers game for the most part and now WWE is trying a new tactic.
One of the things that made NXT such a popular wrestling show was how different it felt than the main roster WWE shows. NXT was an hour long and often left you wanting more rather than asking how much time was left in the show. That stopped being the case when it moved over to USA, and now it seems that more changes may be coming in a shift towards the main WWE structure.
According to Wrestlingnews.co, Vince McMahon is not pleased with the television ratings and audience that NXT is drawing. While he is not ready to shake up NXT creative just yet, McMahon wants more main roster talent on the show. There is no word on who these names would be, though Finn Balor was sent to NXT full time and Charlotte held the NXT Women’s Title for two months, starting in April at WrestleMania 36.
Main roster names have been in NXT before. Check out some of the bigger instances:
Opinion: I can see this one going either way. First of all, NXT is indeed losing to Dynamite most weeks, but it’s not like they’re being squashed most of the time. At the same time though, a good number of their wins over Dynamite have come when main roster stars appear. Considering NXT is being taped at the same location as Monday Night Raw and SmackDown, some guest stars (possibly long term guest stars or just stars in general) wouldn’t be a hard achievement. I’m just not sure I want it to happen.
