FOX CEO Lachlan Murdoch spoke on FOX’s earnings call this week and was asked about SmackDown leaving the network. Murdoch said that the two sides moved on because the show wasn’t “hitting the advertising numbers due to the audience of WWE for our return on investment”. Murdoch went on to say that FOX wished WWE luck but FOX had “moved on from them.” WWE’s current deal with FOX ends next October.
It has been a good run. Check out some of WWE on FOX over the years:
Opinion: That is a hard one for WWE as the head of FOX is flat out saying that it didn’t work for them. WWE did well in their time at FOX, but apparently FOX did not think it went well enough. I wouldn’t call it a failure as WWE got to a network in the first place, but it is not exactly a great way to wrap things up. It should be interesting to see where the other WWE shows go, though hopefully the endings elsewhere go better than this.
