When John met John, it was about Shawn. One of the most underrated stories the WWE has put on in the last ten years has been Shawn Michaels being forced to work for John Bradshaw Layfield. The talking was incredible and if Layfield could have backed it up in the ring, this easily could have been a top match at Wrestlemania. Layfield had some stops on the way to that big match though and that included a stop at “Royal Rumble 2009”.
WWE has released the full video of John Cena vs. Layfield from “Royal Rumble 2009”. The idea here was that Michaels had to work for Layfield and was ordered to help Layfield win the World Heavyweight Championship. Michaels superkicked them both and left, which didn’t sit well with Layfield. Here’s the match:
FULL MATCH - John Cena vs. JBL - World Heavyweight Title Match: Royal Rumble 2009
Opinion: Layfield vs. Michaels would be blown off the following month but the promos were excellent. The interesting thing here is Cena, who was pretty much just a warm body in the whole thing, despite being the World Heavyweight Champion. 2009 wasn’t the best year for him and this wasn’t the best start to it either. At least the story was good, even if the match might not have been.
