Charlotte’s First Challenger Officially Set

The first of (maybe) many. Back at WrestleMania 36, Charlotte became the NXT Women’s Champion for the second time in her career. It was a bit of a surprising title change but Charlotte coming to NXT could do a lot of things for its women’s division. Charlotte is the champion again and, like most champions, that means she needs someone to face. We now have that covered.

With so many wrestling events having been postponed or outright canceled due to the spread of the Coronavirus, something had to be done to fill in a lot of that time. At the same time, a lot of matches and angles had already been set up. Therefore, it was easy to move back to those matches when you were given a chance. Now one of those major matches has taken place.

This week on NXT, Io Shirai won a six woman ladder match to become the new #1 contender for the NXT Women’s Title. The match also included Tegan Nox, Candice LeRae, Dakota Kai, Chelsea Green and Mia Yim. This match was originally scheduled for Takeover: Tampa. It is not clear when Shirai will receive her title shot. The match will mark the first time that Shirai and Charlotte have ever faced each other.

Opinion: This is an interesting way to go as Charlotte is being brought in to boost the show’s ratings. Giving her some fresh matches against quality competition is one of the best ways to make that work and it’s what we’re getting here. The match was a hard hitting brawl on top of that so hopefully we should be in for something that is as good as it sounds like it could be.
