Change Up: WWE Reportedly Making Surprising Commentary Switch

It’s a different way to go. Commentary has all kinds of responsibilities on a wrestling show, including leading the audience through the show. The voices need to be something fans can trust and it helps to have someone with in-ring experience. There have been all kinds of different ways to go with commentary over the years and now we are seeing WWE trying something new.

According to PW Insider Elite, Wade Barrett and Corey Graves are expected to become the new SmackDown commentary team, with Graves serving as the play by play announcer for the first time in his career. This comes after Pat McAfee replaced Barrett on Monday Night Raw and after former SmackDown play by play commentator Kevin Patrick was released from the company last week.

Opinion: This is a unique situation as Graves has spent his entire commentary career as a color analyst but now he’s taking over the lead role. That is a big change of pace and I’m not sure how well it is going to go, but it’s interesting to see WWE try. What matters here is that WWE is trying something new and Graves is more than familiar enough to be the focal point of the team. Now just make it work.
