He might have some disagreement on this one. Bret Hart is one of the biggest stars in WWE history and produced some of the greatest matches and moments of all time, especially at Wrestlemania. It’s always interesting to get an insider’s perspective on things like this and luckily we can get Hart’s take on his own Wrestlemania career.
Hart recently spoke with Sports Illustrated about what he considers his greatest match ever at Wrestlemania. While a lot of people would probably guess either the submission match against Steve Austin at “Wrestlemania XIII” or the match against his brother Owen at “Wrestlemania X”, Hart actually had another pick.
“I remember there was a certain point when I had to be setting up a move with exactly five minutes left in the match. I remember setting up on the second rope and looking at the score clock, and there were exactly four minutes and fifty-nine seconds left in the match. It was those little details where we were exactly on cue, on the second, that made the “Iron Man” match unlike any other live drama.
“The amazing stuff I did with Shawn that day eclipses anything I ever did in terms of timing and thinking on my feet. The drama of me staggering back up to my feet, still fighting, then taking the big boot for Shawn’s finish, and the drama, frustration, and emotion my fans must have felt was huge. It still stands as one of the most dramatic matches in WrestleMania history.”
Opinion: I’m a bit surprised at Hart’s pick but then again this is the same guy who said that the Mongolian Stomper was the greatest Canadian wrestler of all time. I never found the Iron Man match to be all that exciting throughout though the ending really is one of the best moments in Wrestlemania history. It’s certainly a good match but I’d take the Austin match over almost any other in history.
