A record made to be broken. Back in 1971, Luke Graham and Tarzan Tyler defeated Dick the Bruiser and the Sheik to become the first ever World Tag Team Champions. These were the same titles that would be defended in WWE until 2010 and are the most famous Tag Team Titles the company has ever had. Over the years, several other Tag Team Titles have been defended in the company by hundreds of wrestlers, but one man stands atop the rest.
According to the WWE’s India Twitter account, Kofi Kingston has held a Tag Team Title for more combined days than anyone in the company’s history. Kingston has now held a title for 954 days, surpassing Billy Gunn for the top spot. His 954 days are spread out over eight reigns, including five with New Day and one each with CM Punk, Evan Bourne and R-Truth. Kingston has held the Raw Tag Team Titles four times, the SmackDown Tag Team Titles three times and the World Tag Team Titles one time.
It's official! @TrueKofi is the #WWESuperstar with the most days as a Tag Team Champion in @WWE!
No wonder, @WWEBigE & @XavierWoodsPhD hold him in such high regard! Congratulations from #India. pic.twitter.com/Yol9uZvF5T— WWE India (@WWEIndia) September 25, 2018
I think we need a new list.
Opinion: So I guess we’re not counting Lelani Kai and Judy Martin’s 1,157 days as Women’s Tag Team Champions anymore? I mean I don’t think anyone is but I was just checking. Kingston has long been a first ballot Hall of Famer and it’s nice to see him have a record of his own instead of sharing it with New Day. It’s very impressive to see him go from such a popular singles act to something like this in a different style and he’s made both work very well.
What is your favorite Kingston team other than New Day? Will he ever be World Champion? Let us know in the comments below.
