Get your brackets ready. A tournament is one of the easiest things in the world for a wrestling fan to understand. You take a bunch of wrestlers or teams and put them into a bracket with the last one standing winning a prize of some sort. That is something that is always going to work in wrestling and it seems like it will be doing just that again the next time.

The AEW women’s division has been a bit of an up and down situation since the promotion debuted. After a rocky start, the division has started to find its footing with a batch of talented wrestlers. Hikaru Shida has held the AEW Women’s Title since May 2020, meaning she has spent a lot of time cleaning out the division. She needs a fresh challenger and AEW is going about finding her one.

During this week’s edition of Dynamite, AEW announced a new sixteen woman #1 contenders tournament to crown a challenger for Shida’s title. There were no more details announced for the tournament, including who will be involved, when the tournament will begin or when the title match will take place. This will be the second women’s tournament presented by AEW following the Women’s Tag Team Tournament in 2020.

Opinion: I’m not sure if the tournament needed sixteen entrants but it is certainly an idea for someone to challenge Shida. After holding the title for about eight months, Shida is going to need someone to come after the title. The good thing is that AEW has a wide variety of challengers available. This tournament could take a good while to get through, but hopefully we just get some good wrestling out of it.
