From out of the mothballs. There are a lot of legendary titles in wrestling history and some of them have lives after their original runs end. The most famous is probably the Big Gold Belt, which started all the way back in 1986 and kept popping up for years until it was retired in 2014. In addition to the famous ones, there are some that are lesser known and one of them was brought back this week.
AEW’s Fyter Fest has come and gone but the scheduled main event never took place. The original featured match would have seen AEW World Champion Jon Moxley defend against Brian cage, but Moxley being exposed to the Coronavirus forced the match to be postponed. That did not sit well with either Cage or his manager Taz, who had an announcement to make on the night the match was supposed to take place.
This week on AEW Dynamite, Taz presented Cage with the FTW (F*** The World) Title, a personalized championship that he had used in ECW. Taz gave the title to Cage, saying that he should have his own championship as he came into the title match with Moxley. The FTW Title originally existed from May 14, 1998 until March 21, 1999 when Taz unified it with the ECW World Title. There is no word on if the FTW Title will stay around in AEW.
It’s a heck of a prize. Check out how the announcement and presentation went down:
Opinion: You take on the FTW Title being used in 2020 may vary, but as long as Taz and the title itself are the only ECW references, it should be ok. Bringing it back wasn’t quite the biggest deal in the world and I’m not sure how necessary it really is, but at least they got Cage and Taz on the show. Just don’t turn it into some big ECW tribute to go along with the other half dozen we get every year from various promotions.
