Multiple sources are now reporting that George “the Animal” Steele has passed away at the age of 79.
Unconfirmed reports of the legend’s passing had been circulating throughout the day, and WWE officially confirmed the news this morning.
Born William James Myers, his real-life persona was quite different from the childlike monster he portrayed in the ring. He earned a master’s degree in his home state of Michigan, and spent his early career as a teacher, along with coaching both football and amateur wrestling.
He supplemented his teacher’s income by working with local wrestling promotions in Detroit. He was scouted by WWF in the late 60s, taking on the ring name George Steele. For two decades, he portrayed a crazy villain, managed by legendary names like Freddie Blassie, Lou Albano, and Mr. Fuji in feuds against the likes of Bruno Sammartino, Pedro Morales, and Bob Backlund.
But his face turn in the 80s and “gentle giant” character are what Steele is now best known for. His most famous feud was against Randy Savage, where he competed for the affections of Miss Elizabeth for years.
Steele retired in 1988 due to Crohn’s disease, though he made a few more appearances in WWE, WCW, and TNA many years later.
George Steele passed away in hospice care on the evening of February 16th.
WWE stars new and old have been expressing their sympathies on social media.
