Through most of the reinvigoration of the modern women’s division, WWE paid little attention to those who had come before–except, of course, Trish and Lita. But that’s slowly starting to change.

We recently reported that WWE was looking into bringing in some past female stars for this year’s WrestleMania, and this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required) offered a bit more detail on what’s happening.

Kelly Kelly, who recently teased a WrestleMania appearance through official WWE channels, was backstage at Raw this week. She’s one of the women who was contacted by WWE for something at Mania.

While it’s good to see WWE acknowledging past female stars beyond Trish and Lita, Kelly Kelly really isn’t the best choice for showcasing those forgotten women. She was never particularly good in the ring, and her character is best known a weekly striptease segment on WWE’s ECW reboot.

Lisa Varon–better known to WWE fans as Victoria–also teased a WrestleMania appearance on Snapchat.

We don’t know exactly what WWE’s plans are, but a bit of speculation might suggest a battle royal or other similar multi-person match. With a women’s tournament still in the works, it makes sense to highlight that division.

Even if WWE’s modern women have come a long way from this:
