One of the most predictable tropes of WWE is that if you’re wrestling in your hometown, you’re very likely to lose. The examples are too numerous to count, but one of the more memorable recent ones involves Charlotte and Sasha Banks. Sasha Banks lost the Raw Women’s Championship in her hometown of Boston. Charlotte lost it in her namesake town in North Carolina.
What’s the deal? Every booking decision ultimately comes down to Vince McMahon, so he’s the one making the decision. But even the creative team doesn’t know the reason why.
Matt McCarthy, a member of WWE’s creative team in 2010-2011, was recently interviewed on PWTorch Livecast. He went along for the ride on the hometown losses without ever knowing why.

“I mean, I don’t know why (Vince) does that,” McCarthy said, “but it’s something that’s always happened. I don’t remember any specific examples of it, but there was always an awareness of, ‘Well, what town are we in, oh so-and-so is from here, Vince is probably going to want him to lose.’ I never, ever got an explanation for why that was. Even a general booking philosophy of why you’d do that.”

Another Vince McMahon mystery still unsolved. Will we ever know why? Will we ever see somebody win big in their birthplace?
