The Festival of Friendship was as perfectly-executed a segment as WWE has put on in years. But with all the talk of the big betrayal that capped off the bit, we’ve barely had a chance to discuss the unlikely return that also played a part.
Chris Jericho promised Kevin Owens a chance to beat up on his Fastlane opponent, Goldberg. And it seemed he would deliver, calling for Goldberg’s entrance and standing by while the music hit.
Of course, the crew members standing by with sparklers and a fire extinguisher to stand in for Goldberg’s iconic smoke and spark entrance were a dead giveaway. It wouldn’t be the WCW legend, but WWE’s Attitude Era parody, Gillberg.
It wasn’t quite what Owens was hoping for, but at least the Universal Champ seemed to enjoy the resulting beatdown, as you can see in the video below.
It was a great part of an incredible segment, and while we’ll miss JeriKO, we’re glad the friendship went out in such dramatic style.
Gillberg–aka Gill–started in WWF as an early 90s jobber, before returning later in the decade in a story that eventually saw him become a parody of Goldberg. Oddly enough, he has an absurdly long title reign, having held the often-forgotten Light Heavyweight Championship for 448 days.
Goldberg himself got in on the conversation, but as always Kevin Owens had a response ready.
Morons….
