During the height of the Monday Night Wars, WWE had Jim Ross, and WCW had Tony Schiavone. The legendary announcer recently answered some revealing fan questions.
In the AMA on Reddit, Schiavone was asked if Scott Steiner was as insane backstage as in the ring.
“Yes he was. He scared the hell out of us all the time. We never knew what he would do next. Whenever he came out to the set, and I know I can speak for Heenan and Tenay, we were scared. I’m not so sure if he was sincerely like that, or if it was part of his gimmick and he wanted us to believe it, but we believed it!”
He was also asked what he felt the worst WCW angles were. He wasn’t a fan of the fingerpoke of doom, but he saved special derision for the infamous Yeti.
“I didn’t know what he’d look like at first I thought it would be like a B-Horror. Then he came out and looked like he was butt f—ing Hogan, that didn’t help. I’ve been asked why I called it the YETAY, but I figured that since I was in the middle of a bullsh– angle, I’d do bullsh– commentary. At least we all got something memorable out of it.”
Surprisingly, though, he didn’t have much negative to say about David Arquette’s controversial title win, saying that “it brought a lot of eyes to the product.”
And, of course, someone asked what was truly “the greatest night in the history of our sport.”
“Well, I guess for me a lot of it could be pointing out to the final Nitro. Doing Nitro become such a chore and so difficult to do for many reasons, so I was glad it was over. Personally, one of the great nights for me was my first show at the Garden, with Lord Alfred Hayes and Hogan and Bossman in a cage. For me, those are the top two.”
