The brand split has been framed as war between rivals on-screen, but the truth is that Vince McMahon runs both shows and has the ultimate say whether it comes to Raw or SmackDown. But do the on-screen general managers actually have any say in the creative process?
The answer is yes–or at least a little, according to Mick Foley. On the latest episode of Lilian Garcia’s Making Their Way To The Ring (transcribed by 411Mania), Mick was asked if he had any creative control.
“I do get some say,” he revealed. “Yeah, they’re pretty good. They know that I wouldn’t be doing the job unless I believed in it.”
Mick says his role as GM is a passion project more than a career move, however. “When it comes to WWE I actually make less money by being GM than I would if I was working for myself. But I believe this is an important job. I do. It has a chance to steer the way the show is seen.”
The same interview saw Mick discuss an incident where one major WWE star got chewed out by Vince backstage, and his suspicions about why fans have started to choose SmackDown over Raw.
