Derek: Was there ever a time in your career where you thought, “this isn’t for me, I can’t do this, I need to go used cars” or something like that?
Justin: Yeah, the last two or three years. I had been there for a long time. I always wondered when Coach was on his way out. How could he leave? This was the best. How could you leave this? And then, my last two or three years there, I was like, “OK, I get it.” By the point, I was just over it, I was jaded and it wasn’t the actual job, because I love getting in front of a crowd, I love doing shows. But, just the politics and the travel and it was non-stop. There was politics; it used to just be at TV, and then it became politics at house shows. Because they were overproducing them and bringing in people who weren’t from the wrestling business and were running a television show, but not doing it the way it should be done. So, between the politics and politicking every day and being on the road.
There were times when you would fly say into, say, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. (Hello, Chris Jericho!) Fly all day to get to Winnipeg, you get in, you do a show and then you fly right out and go somewhere across the country and get then in, and then you’d have to rent a car and it would be a one-way drop. And you’d have to get to a hotel where you had a few hours sleep, but then you had to check out of your hotel because you needed to return the car and drive somewhere else. There wasn’t time scheduled in there to eat and sleep, and there were so many really long days. It was grueling travel, it really was.
Nobody ever thought, “let’s do this, they’re going to be tired, they’re going to need a day to sleep.” It wasn’t like that, it was just go, go, go, go, go. We always said that the booking was done by a Dark Lord at the office. A lot of times it didn’t make sense.
When you’re new; there was crazy travel when I first started, on my first loop. But you’re not thinking about it, you’re just excited to be there. So, when I had been there for the while, and you’re sick of the politics, and you’re thinking about all the travel and you know how ridiculous it is, you just get to a point where I’d rather be at home and sleeping in my own bed and being around my family and friends. Just taking a break, at a normal job. I got to do my dream job, got it out of my system, and now pay bills and find something else that I might enjoy. But, it had worn off.
Derek: One of the things I was going to ask you was, we all need to unwind. What do you do for fun? Do you have any hobbies, or do you have anything that you do in your spare time to get away from the daily grind?
Justin: Yeah, I go to the gym. That’s my place to kind of sleepwalk through a workout, go through the motions and that’s where I let really my mind wander and I come up with a lot of ideas. I do my best thinking at the gym. And will go sit at the pool for a little bit.
I went hard for over a decade, 52 weeks a year, all over the world. Sometimes we’d be in three countries in a day. We’d have breakfast, go do a show in a different country, then after the show, you’d fly out to a different country, go to sleep there. So, I went hard for a long time and now I just enjoy taking it easy, and as fun gigs pop up and I think “that sounds cool, I think I’d like that,” I just jump on and do that then go back to taking it easy.
