Enuhito.com has released a translation of an interview that Jushin “Thunder” Liger conducted with New Japan Pro Wrestling on why he will be competing at “NXT Takeover: Brooklyn” this weekend for WWE.
An agent contacted Matt Bloom, who is a trainer for NXT and who played Tensai most recently for WWE, and arranged to have a special seat for Liger at the show. Liger didn’t wear his mask, so that no one would recognize him as the Japanese wrestling legend.
After the show, Liger came up and introduced himself to Balor, who competed against Neville that evening. Liger was reportedly very impressed with the match, and Balor showed his gratitude to him for attending the show.
A few weeks later, NJPW got a call from WWE asking if Liger would like to perform at “NXT Takeover: Brooklyn.” Liger agreed, and the contracts were signed.
This is a one-time appearance by Liger for WWE, which will not be breaking his contracts with ROH or NJPW. He is scheduled to compete against Tyler Breeze this Saturday at “Takeover” in Brooklyn, New York.
You can find the translated interview at this link, and the original Japanese content at this link.
Editor’s Note:
I really hope Liger and Breeze put on a heck of a match this Sunday. Having a pro wrestling legend like Liger compete in WWE is a big deal, and could lead to some more cross-promotional matches in the future.
