The Wrestling Observer Newsletter was first to report that WWE was strongly considering booking a bout between John Cena and current United States Champion Rusev at WrestleMania 31.

After the “Royal Rumble” pay-per-view on Jan. 25, it appears that will be the direction those two superstars are headed.

During the “Royal Rumble Fallout” on the WWE Network, Rusev interrupted Cena’s backstage interview by grabbing his mic and talking to the camera. Cena then shoved Rusev, leading to several WWE superstars coming in to separate the two as they went nose-to-nose.

Cena lost his WWE World Heavyweight Championship match on the show, although he wasn’t involved in the decision. Brock Lesnar pinned Seth Rollins to retain the gold in the Triple Threat match.

Rusev had an impressive showing in the Rumble itself, eliminating six superstars in a little over 35 minutes.

Editor’s Note

There’s not a part of me that wants to see John Cena vs. Rusev at WrestleMania 31. I don’t believe Cena will do what’s right and put over his opponent. If that were true, he would have done so last year against Bray Wyatt.
