This past Thursday night on “TNA Impact,” Eric Young defeated Magnus to become TNA World Heavyweight Champion.
Many fans started questioning TNA’s decision to put the gold on Young, especially after a similar victory had just taken place at WrestleMania XXX when Daniel Bryan defeated Batista and Randy Orton to become WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
On a recent edition of “Ring Rust Radio” with Donald Wood, Mike Chiari, and Brandon Galvin, Young was asked how he felt about his title win being strongly compared to that of Bryan’s:
I definitely see the comparisons. Like you said, we both have sweet beards, we both won two matches, we’re both world heavyweight champion, and I don’t think either of us are prototypical champions. That’s what makes us special. Anytime someone wants to make a comparison between me and Daniel Bryan, go ahead and knock yourself out. He’s a super talented guy. I never met him personally, but I know lots of guys that know him and he’s a nice guy. I listened to his interview on Steve Austin’s podcast and he sounds like he’s a cool dude. Anytime anyone wants to compare me to him, they can go right ahead.
Editor’s Note
Whether they’d like to admit it or not, Bryan’s WrestleMania XXX win had a lot to do with Young becoming champion shortly thereafter. It’s too similar not to make the obvious comparisons. Young has been with TNA since its inception, so he’s certainly deserving of the moment. It’s a good story, but as they’ve done in the past, IMPACT Wrestling is throwing something at the wall to see if it sticks.
