The Cruiserweight division has struggled a bit to find its footing on RAW, but the Cruiserweight title is still part of the brand (at least, when it isn’t being defended on WWE Network’s 205 Live). That means the title is going to be defended on the next RAW brand pay-per-view, Roadblock. Prior to Monday’s RAW, WWE’s Charly Caruso announced that the Cruiserweight title will be defended in a triple threat match.
Don’t expect anything terribly new or interesting, though. All three men who have held the Cruiserweight title will be involved in the match. That’s current title holder Rich Swann, T.J. Perkins, and wily old veteran Brian Kendrick. So fans who aren’t enthused about the cruiserweight division have to deal with more of the same, but at least there will be three guys in the match. That could make it a little more exciting, and lead to some cool spots.

Kendrick is the resident heel of the cruiserweight division, so his presence was basically necessary. While there are ostensibly other heels in the division, Kendrick, despite not being an up-and-comer, is the only one who seems to be considered a viable championship threat by the company. Perkins and Swann are both fine workers in the ring, but there is one thing clearly separating them. Perkins mostly lacks a personality, and he doesn’t seem to really connect with the audience. Swann at least has a real energy to him, even if his gimmick seems to just be “dancing.” It made sense to give him the title, since Perkins didn’t seem ready and Kendrick is probably not a “wrestler of the future” type guy. Of course, if the cruiserweights don’t start getting over, there might not be much of a future for most of them. This match could be a make-or-break moment for the division, or at least for the potential of Perkins, and perhaps Swann. Also, it’d be nice for a match in a division that supposedly sells high-flying moves that bigger wrestlers can’t do to end in a way that doesn’t include a submission move or a simple kick to the head.
