Zack Ryder’s knee injury has really thrown the proverbial monkey wrench into the plans for Smackdown’s tag team titles. Ryder and Mojo Rawley, the once-and-future Hype Bros, won a tag team battle royal to make themselves the No. 1 contenders for the titles, which are currently held by the Wyatt Family. Now, obviously, with Ryder on the shelf, this can’t happen, and the WWE now has only one route they can take. They have to turn to American Alpha.
The blue brand is lopsided when it comes to the tag team division, with more of the teams leaning heel. With the Hype Bros. unable to compete, the only face tag team outside of American Alpha are Rhyno and Heath Slater who were always a short-term proposition. They’ve already been teasing tension between the two, and they’ve already lost the title to Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton and lost a rematch. No, it has to be American Alpha.

To be fair, it was probably inevitable that these two teams were going to be squaring off for the championship. The Hype Bros. aren’t a real threat to the Wyatt Family. They were a generic plug-in to delay the battle between the Wyatts and American Alpha. Ryder and Rawley were going to be beat, and then American Alpha would provide a legitimate threat to the Wyatts. A dude in Zubaz was never going to hold a title belt. The team of Jason Jordan and Chad Gable seem to be well-thought of by WWE, and the fans certainly like them well enough. Orton and Wyatt aren’t likely to remain a team forever, or even long-term. In time, American Alpha are going to be tag team champs. If WWE doesn’t want to speed up that process, they are probably going to have to take a couple losses to the Wyatts first. The WWE’s hand has been forced by injury. It now has to be American Alpha’s time.
