We know one more match that will be taking place at Royal Rumble, as on RAW Mick Foley announced that Roman Reigns would get a rematch with Kevin Owens for the Universal Title. The main takeaway from this announcement was probably the fact that Chris Jericho will be suspended above the ring in a cage so he can’t interfere. There was another major takeaway one could have gotten from this announcement, though, and it’s the fact the WWE apparently doesn’t care about the US Title at all.
You remember the United States Championship, right? It’s that belt Reigns has around his waist. Evidently, it’s only there as a garish adornment, because the WWE seems to be completely apathetic about it. Reigns did not defend the title at Roadblock, because he was facing Owens for the Universal Title. Now, we know he won’t be defending it at Royal Rumble either, unless he pulls double duty. When does Reigns ever defend the US Title? He’s too busy with other feuds and other matches. The US Title is going to waste.
A title belt is a way to drive feuds and give matches stakes. The US Title is being used…to make Reigns a champion? It’s a trinket Reigns carries around so that he’s a champ, and that’s pretty inane. Over on Smackdown, The Miz has been doing great things with their secondary belt, the Intercontinental Title. On RAW, they might as well not have a secondary title. The WWE needs to either get Reigns into a feud over his belt, or get it off him. The current status quo is a severe misstep.
